A Lesson Learned or How to be Grateful of Failures

Some days, no matter how well you’ve planned it, things just do not follow that plan. Yesterday was one of those days for me.

I gathered all the things together for a particular photo I wanted to take, scouted a location and found the most wonderful spot. I decided to experiment with some of the preset lighting options and, much to my surprise, I ended up with some absolutely terrific shots. Or so I thought.

After I’d returned my camera settings to mild — damn this ridiculously slow internet — and grabbed a taxi home I decided I really wanted to get stuck into editing those pictures. I opened the relevant folders on my computer only to find all of my brilliant shots had saved as blue screens of death. Every. Single. One.

There were a lot of swear words spoken at that point. And some serious disappointment, especially given I find experimenting with the lighting options very time consuming and, thus, I rarely do it. I know, I should try new techniques, lighting options and ideas more often as that will help to improve my photography.

Anyway, back to the blue screen of death.
I’m not sure what caused it so I don’t know what to look for to prevent it happening again. I did learn, however, that I need to check the files have saved correctly before leaving a place. Especially when taking photographs on location.

I did attempt to re-take the photos but I couldn’t get any of the composition right because, naturally, I wanted it to look exactly the same as my wonderful first shoot.
I understand that these things happen and it’s okay to re-shoot and even encouraged as it’s likely the extra shots, particularly at different angles and with different lighting, will  improve the chances of a useable shot. Excluding the blue screen of death of course.
It’s just, well, I was really impressed with the shots I’d managed to get the first time around.

After a few more choice swear words I packed up my pixels and went home to sulk. I tried to get a few shots in the studio at my house, but they also didn’t turn out like I’d hoped they would. By that stage it was quite late at night so I decided that enough was enough, I’d stop forcing this to happen and just go to bed.

Let me tell you, it helped! I was able to not only write this post but was able to grab a pretty decent shot to show just how angry I was!!
