10 Reasons Why I Smiled This Week

I tend to have a hard time looking at the good things in life, the bright side of life for my Monty Python-ites out there — *waves* — so I thought I would write a list of all the unicorn* things that have happened in the last week that have made me smile.
*By unicorn, I mean mysteriously magical mythical things.

  1. My new friend K’s awesomeness by making my Sailor Moon pose for free. And for no other reason than she wanted to help me out. Who does that these days?! Thank you again K! So much!!
  2. Conversations on Twitter, because they have been keeping me sane in their madness. Bacon is now a religion and porking someone is totally not what you think!
  3. First ever early access to a fair (Shiny Shabby), thanks to [SL] Blogger Support. I actually had no idea that group is granted early access to some fairs and events. I’d probably have been too terrified to apply if I’d known that!!
  4. Ticking lots of things off my to-do lists!
  5. Productive meetings.
  6. First blogging event acceptance: Body Art Hunt!
  7. SL12B Greeter acceptance. Oh Em Gee! I am so excited! Squee!!
  8. Ever Afterr. Yeah she totes gets a mention because somehow she completes me!
  9. Being told by co-workers and boss ladies that I’ve done an amazing job with my internship!
  10. Spending Geek Pride Day being awesome and watching movies with the Eidann.

I couldn’t imagine this many wonderful things happening even if I tried!
That’s not to say amazing things don’t happen to me. They most definitely do! I am usually oblivious to them. Plus, more often than not, I talk myself out of things because I rarely feel like I’m good enough.

For instance, I’m chomping at the bit to get my blog on some feeds and to get some blogging applications in. However, most feeds and blogging applications require a minimum blog age of 3 months; I still have a little under two months to go.
At the same time I’m terrified of applying for either because, like many people, I’m afraid of rejection. I’m afraid of the never-hearing-anything or, worse, correspondence telling me I’m terrible unsuccessful at this time.

Because one instance is never enough, here’s another. When I finally decided to apply for the internship with VIRTUALVillage Media it took me a week to build up the courage just to hit submit  on the application! I’m not exaggerating either. It might have been a few days more than a week if I’m truly honest.
I decided to copy all of the questions in the application into a document and I sat there every day for that week working on my responses; editing, tweaking, fixing and lots of coffee and a fair amount of swearing later I finally let it go and hit “submit”.
And then I spent the next few days in a panic because I was so damn sure they’d have far better candidates than I lined up.
“That’s okay” I told myself. And it was because I had done something I’d never done before; I hit submit.

In case you’re wondering, I did get the internship at VIRTUALVillage Media and I love it more than I love coffee. And I really love coffee.

During the the last week I have finally figured out that patience is actually quite rewarding. The internship, the blogging for Body Art Hunt and being accepted as a greeter for the SL12B celebrations were all applied for days, weeks and even a month before I heard confirmation or was accepted. You can probably tell that patience has never been my strongest suit. I’m getting there, slowly.

And, while I patiently wait for my minimum three month blog age, I can take my time reading through the feeds and events and pick the ones that best suit me and my brand. I suppose I shouldn’t really say it like that, as if I’m being some picky snob. I guess I am to an extent, this is my brand and my blog that I am building and spending so much time working on. This is the thing I love to do so yeah, I will be picky and I will strive for being added and accepted to the feeds and bloggers groups that inspire me to not only write but to be more than ordinary.

Whether or not that’s achievable, who knows. All I do know is that I am excited about all these wonderful things happening and I’m looking forward to seeing what other wonders will unfold.

I hope you’ve had many wonderful things to smile about this week. Let me know in the comments!

Fangirl Edit #3 Somnia

For this episode we’re going to see some cute things from Somnia because I was there looking around during one of those rare times when I procrastinate — for the purpose of this post I never procrastinate (there may be sarcasm in that sentence).

While I was there I decided to ride one of the washing machines, which sounds really dirty but is totally not what you’re thinking. You can actually race the washing machines — awesome! — so being the inquisitive sort I thought “why not?!”

I was cruising down the centre of the store when I see another customer and, being the awesome driver I am, I knew that I would be able to avoid a collision, so I slammed on the break (i.e. going backwards) then hammered my right arrow key to turn. I believe the correct phasing was “turn bitch, turn!”. So there I am going suddenly going backwards, then forwards and then I turned, which is when I started breathing a huge sigh of relief; catastrophe averted.

And then, out of nowhere I start reversing again and back into this poor — and rather lovely — customer. This damned, because it was definitely not user error here (sarcasm here too), washing machine backs into her not just once, oh no we couldn’t have that, it backed into her four times. It was like this washing machine had a mind of its own and decided it really didn’t like this beautiful avatar standing there.

Needless to say I was embarrassed beyond belief.
I jumped off the demonic washing machine — yeah I’m going to use that line to death — and ran to the other side of the store and pretended to look nonchalant. Once I’d collected myself and realised the lovely lady couldn’t actually hear me saying “I’m so sorry” over and over again, because I didn’t have my mic on nor voice activated, I gave myself a quick pep talk — “get the hell over there and apologise you wimp” — and then proceeded to walk over to her and to apologise.

That’s right, this shy little kitten walked herself over to this badly beaten and bruised lady and apologised for being silly and riding the washing machine during a really bad lag period.

And do you know what happened?

This wonderful soul, whose name I didn’t record because that would have been a really good idea, said “that’s okay. SL is being really laggy” and I very nearly burst into tears because no one ever says “that’s okay” when they’ve been brutally attacked by a demonic washing machine being ridden by a foolish 8-year-old avatar.

She was so wonderful and gracious I apologised some more and actually turned red from being so embarrassed and I wanted to just dissolve right then and there. I was also wondering why SL didn’t crash right at that moment and swallow me up in it. Bloody Second Life, it’s never there when you need it, am I right?!

Demonic washing machines aside, I also found this adorable little sitting area with cats and a floppy disk flower pot! It’s a flower pot made out of floppy disks! It’s so brilliant I want to make one in that place which shall not be named (RL). If you’re too young to remember floppy disks then, well, I guess you should stop at the demonic washing machines, or skip ahead to the next paragraph.
Also, I’m getting a real kick out of writing, and saying, “floppy disks”! Partly because the geek side of me is in awe someone actually thought of that (I need to go back and find out whom the creator is) and partly because it’s one of the unicorns of Geekdom. Okay, okay I’ll shut up about the floppy disk!

If you weren’t aware by now, I’ve only dropped maybe 10 hints, I am totally a cat person. I’m not a neko in-world anymore, I am exploring other avenues at the moment, but in the other world (known to some as real life) I wear cat ears more often than a sane person would, purr and have most of the traits of a cat complete with the “Slave, I need attention, NOW” stare.

So I’m a cat person, we got it.
Somnia has cat couches. Couches that have cat ears and cat paws and are cat coloured and omg CATS.

Apparently I went a little overboard on the cat bit, but it was adorable and I want some or maybe I’ll just move in there when no one’s around so it doesn’t look like I’m living in a shop, on a couch and racing washing machines…

Somnia Fangirl Edit_008

Now, I’m a good little kitty and actually sent Sanura Summer Snowpaw (sanura.snowpaw) an email — I did not stalk her profile to find out her preferred way to correspond (sarcasm, again) — to ask if it would be okay to feature her store in this episode of the Fangirl Edit. Particularly since I’m not featuring it in the normal sense of the word “feature”. Anyway, Sanura is absolutely lovely and told me a little more about the washing machines:

I thought I would give you a little bit of info as well as to the fantastic rideable racing washing machines a friend made them and I had her original design in my store for years. and when I rebranded I asked her to make me a few for my store in my colors. Which she did shortly thereafter I believe she left SL. They are a bit hard to control but I think that is part of their charm they bounce up and down and have a bit of a mind of their own. It is also HILARIOUS because they end up all over the sim and I have to go track them down from time to time.

That just about does it!
If I’m not at home you know where to find me 😉

Geeks Shall Inherit the Earth!

The greatest day of the year is fast approaching and Geeks everywhere are preparing for this momentous of days by watching their favourite movies, playing their favourite games — board, pc and/or console — and eating bacon.
Yeah, I went there because bacon.

Geek Pride Day is on the 25th of May, which is this coming Monday. It’s the day when Geeks around the world celebrate their geekiness, their nerdiness and their general awesomeness! It’s the day when Geeks can proudly proclaim “I am a Geek” and all the muggles look on in awed amazement at the mystically mythical Geeks before them.

Okay, so it’s not quite that epic — yet — but it is a day to celebrate all things geek and all people who identify as a geek. Weird choice of words? Well no, some geeks don’t realise they are in fact geeks, particularly if you subscribe to the Simon Pegg idea that a geek is anyone who is passionate about something. I may have paraphrased that to death, here’s the original quote:

Simon Pegg Geek Quote

Geek Pride Day is actually a legitimate geek holiday, I’m not making it up to sound cool or to sound like some kind of Ultra Geek from the sparkly Planet Nerd.
The Wiki of Pedia — Wikipedia — explains the holiday as:

“Geek Pride Day (Spanish: Día del orgullo friki ) is an initiative to promote geek culture, celebrated annually on 25 May. The date was chosen as to commemorate the 1977 release of Star Wars, but shares the same date as two other similar fan “holidays”: Towel Day, for fans of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy trilogy by Douglas Adams, and the Glorious 25th of May for fans of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld.

The initiative originated in Spain in 2006 as “Día del Orgullo Friki” and spread around the world via the Internet.”

While this may seem a little strange, silly or far fetched to some, I am genuinely excited about a day that is globally recognised by geeks for geeks! I have a whole day of awesomeness planned from watching The Princess Bride with the Eidann (it’s one of his favourite movie) to delving into the world of The Fifth Element, followed by playing some DC Universe Online and, time permitted, baking something with a geek theme, yeah that most likely means bacon. In fact, I think I’ll spend the whole week celebrating all things Geek by watching my Sailor Moon DVD collection! *purrs*

I’m not sure if there are any events planned within Second Life to celebrate Geek Pride Day, I’ve asked around but so far I haven’t been lucky enough to get any responses.
If you know of something happening in Second Life for Geek Pride Day please let me know, I’d love to hang out with some of my fellow geeks and rejoice in our geekiness!

What will you be doing on Geek Pride Day? I’d love to hear what you’ve got planned, let me know in the comments!

“Blooming Spring” Tres Chic Event: May 1st – 28th

It probably comes as no surprise when I tell you that I stalk keep an eye on Flickr and Plurk for events, inspiration and anything that’s generally pretty or geeky or — Oh Em Gee — both. It was on Plurk that I found out about this little gem; Blooming Spring” a Tres Chic Event. This is a new monthly event kicked off this month with the theme Blooming Spring. It started on the 1st of May and will run until the 28th of May.
I don’t know about you, but I love events that run longer than a few days or a week because it means I have time to earn some money to then go and buy all the things! So a 28 day event, every month with a focus on fashion is my idea of heaven. And Tres Chic did not disappoint.

Now, I’m not great at the whole “the scenery was lovely” stuff mostly because that’s just not my thing. Then I went to Lions Hill the Tres Chic venue and I was absolutely, unequivocally stunned. It is beautiful. Seriously, it is stunning. The creators, Evelyn (eva.weimes) and Kate Gavin (lovelykitten Resident), have paid attention to every detail, and there are a lot of details! The Tres Chic venue is so utterly gorgeous I spent a whole morning wandering around and taking photo’s. There are so many little nooks and parks and just go there because it’s seriously stunning.

And here’s another look at me and the scenery because I love it that much. Yes, I did mean the scenery not my pixels!

Right, let’s get onto the important part; the fashion! *insert dramatic flare here*

The Tres Chic website states:

Our aim is to promote fashion thats why designers are chosen very carefully.

They weren’t kidding. This round saw the likes of:

Apple May Design
Dead Dollz
Vanity Hair
Sitting Pretty
Any many, many more!
When you first arrive at the Blooming Spring Tres Chic Event you’re given a HUD that allows you to teleport directly to your favourite stores. Now, this may be mundane to some but to me this is absolutely brilliant because I am really sick of huge venues and getting lost and not being able to find the store I’m looking for and just ugh. So having a HUD that teleports me directly to the shop I want is a dream come true. I am so in love with the concept of this HUD I am contemplating petitioning other Events to get on board and adopt these HUDs to make our lives easier. Of course, I need to research this as I fear the age-old “it’s got too many scripts” will be thrown my way.
Because I’m an honest little kitten there were two things that weren’t so great. However, they won’t stop me from returning or telling everyone I meet to go and check out Tres Chic!
The buildings rely on you using mouse look. Now, that’s fine if mouse look is your chosen view, but if you’re like me and hate it with a passion then you’re going to find you can’t actually stand in a store and will, instead, need to cam around. Just for reference, my pixels are short, I’m forever being surrounded by people a lot taller than me, so when my head ended up going through the light fitting in Apple May Designs it was a bit of a shock. I didn’t mind too much since it’s a lovely light and I was giggling too much about having a “light bulb” moment. Remember, it’s the little things!
Out of all the stores that were participating in this round, there were three that had empty shops at the time of writing this:
Mai Bilavio
I am in no way criticising these shops as I know how hard it is to keep up with endless events and fairs and then, because that totally wasn’t enough, actually finding time to create their content. Is there a Content Creator Appreciation Day? If not I wouldn’t mind starting one. Yeah, seriously. If there is one, could you let me know either in the comments or in-world? Thank you so much!
Basically, I love the first round of this event and I’m really excited to see what the future brings for them and what next month’s event has in store!
Let me know, in the comments or on social media, what your favourite things about the Blooming Spring Tres Chic Event were!
