Fangirl Edit #4: My Adventure with a Linden Home

Raznay Decosta SL12B Second Life 12th Birthday Celebrations Exhibit

As you may already be aware — I am slightly envious if you’re not — this week marks the 12th Anniversary of Second Life® being cool.
There are tonnes of celebrations going on over at the SL12B (Second Life® 12th Birthday) sims. If you haven’t done so already head over to their website and see the lineup of entertainment, if the exhibits alone don’t whet your appetite!
And remember, pretty much everything at SL12B is interactive. So touch, sit, click and tickle away while you’re there!

With all this birthday excitement — mine just so happens to be around the corner as well — I thought I’d take a moment to reflect on a recent-ish interaction I had with a most remarkably lovely Linden. By recent-ish I mean within the last month, I think.

One bright sunny day I logged into Second Life® expecting to bound around and be merry. I was changing my hair for the 1,876,339th time that day when I noticed my little linden home. I don’t usually pay an awful lot of attention to it as it’s pretty small and really only the four walls I sit in when I’m trying to write or focus on anything but shopping.
Anyway, I noticed the four walls and the floor and the ceiling and the outdoor area and I cringed. I’d had the same place for something like 4 years.

It needed to change.

So I decide on my 1,876, 340th hair and click the little wall panel — conveniently located on the wall for my occasionally oblivious self — to access my Linden home settings.
Being a highly indecisive cat I thought I would go through all of the pre-fab (not even the right term, but ignorance is bliss) homes to find one I mostly like and then tweak the settings a little to my unique taste.

I click on the first design that I think I’ll like and then go back into my Firestorm viewer. I stomp around my bright cherry wood home while I “ummm” and “ahhh” about certain aspects of the changes.
Eventually — sometimes I do actually get to the point — I decide that I don’t like the way it looks and want to try a different style. Off I skip back to my browser to tweak me some more settings.

Insert tweaking here

And then I go back into Firestorm, just like I did the last time.
Only my house didn’t change. It’s still the bright cherry wood thing that’s starting to make my eyes water.

Back over to my browser. Click the new design and return to Firestorm.
Cherry red wood greets me.
Pick another design in the browser, head back to Firestorm.
Cherry red wood grins at me.
Refresh the browser.
Cherry red wood giggles at me.
Close browser tab, click wall panel in Second Life® again and pick another design.
Cherry red wood glaring at me suggestively.
Browser now has an error message.
Expletives expelled.

Naturally I thought I had done something wrong so I cleared my cache and rebooted the Second of Life. I tickled that wall panel like it was going to squeal — it didn’t, just for the record — then I closed my eyes and hoped for the best as I swiped across to my browser.
I clicked on another house design, I didn’t care anymore as long as it wouldn’t be that blasted red!

Cherry red wood actually had the audacity to groan at me.

More expletives.

Okay, so it’s not me. It’s not the browser (I changed from Safari to Chrome to Opera just in case) and I rebooted Second Life® so I was running out of options.
It was at this point I thought I should submit a support ticked with Linden Lab® since the last time I had to submit a ticket it took weeks to rectify and I wasn’t too keen on living in that decidedly lascivious cheery wood home for that long.

To my surprise, I got a response the next morning asking if I’d tried using the Second Life viewer. I actually refrained from rolling my eyes given it was a fair question and I hadn’t as yet tried that. So off I went and logged in with the standard viewer.

Side note: OMG how do people use that without all the pretty photo tools and the stuff and the cool things and hyperventilates

Anyway, I clicked on my beloved wall panel and off we went to my browser.
I held my breath.
And then the error message came up. Ugh. Pout. Expletives.

A few screen shots later and I’ve replied to the nice person — who wasn’t a Linden but was very friendly and polite even though I’m sure they were annoyed with another person who hadn’t tried the standard viewer first; oops!

The following morning I got another email, this time letting me know that my case had been escalated.
That’s three days with the cheeky cherry wood house. I took a few deep breaths and hid at VIRTUALVillage Media, or a sandbox. I may have even spent the money I was saving just so I had an excuse to not be home.

One more morning rolls on in and I have another email. This time it’s from a Lovely Linden telling me that she’s reset the scripts in my home and asking me if I could please test that it works. She informed me she was able to change the settings, which let me get my hopes up that she’d changed it to something other than that gory cherry wood.

My hopes were dashed.

But I consoled myself in the knowledge that’s not what I was there for. I was on a mission of the highest importance and I needed to fulfil that mission before my sadness could take hold.

I clicked the wall panel, got whisked off to my browser and there I found a page with different house designs to choose from. It had been so long I thought it was just a delusion!
I held my breath to steady my shaking hands and clicked on a style.

I slowly made my way back to Second Life® where I was greeted with stone! And grey! And pale blonde wood!
I cheered with delight!
I sang the song of my people, which just so happened to be the theme song from Firefly; the Ballad of Serenity. It seemed incredibly fitting for some reason. If you don’t know it, hit play and decide for yourself:

I can safely say that my home is back to its beautiful self. I did indeed go back to the original design with my original tweaks. After all that excitement with the cherry wood I just couldn’t handle any more outrageous homes!

Thank you, Linden Labs® for fixing my little home!

Fangirl Edit #3 Somnia

For this episode we’re going to see some cute things from Somnia because I was there looking around during one of those rare times when I procrastinate — for the purpose of this post I never procrastinate (there may be sarcasm in that sentence).

While I was there I decided to ride one of the washing machines, which sounds really dirty but is totally not what you’re thinking. You can actually race the washing machines — awesome! — so being the inquisitive sort I thought “why not?!”

I was cruising down the centre of the store when I see another customer and, being the awesome driver I am, I knew that I would be able to avoid a collision, so I slammed on the break (i.e. going backwards) then hammered my right arrow key to turn. I believe the correct phasing was “turn bitch, turn!”. So there I am going suddenly going backwards, then forwards and then I turned, which is when I started breathing a huge sigh of relief; catastrophe averted.

And then, out of nowhere I start reversing again and back into this poor — and rather lovely — customer. This damned, because it was definitely not user error here (sarcasm here too), washing machine backs into her not just once, oh no we couldn’t have that, it backed into her four times. It was like this washing machine had a mind of its own and decided it really didn’t like this beautiful avatar standing there.

Needless to say I was embarrassed beyond belief.
I jumped off the demonic washing machine — yeah I’m going to use that line to death — and ran to the other side of the store and pretended to look nonchalant. Once I’d collected myself and realised the lovely lady couldn’t actually hear me saying “I’m so sorry” over and over again, because I didn’t have my mic on nor voice activated, I gave myself a quick pep talk — “get the hell over there and apologise you wimp” — and then proceeded to walk over to her and to apologise.

That’s right, this shy little kitten walked herself over to this badly beaten and bruised lady and apologised for being silly and riding the washing machine during a really bad lag period.

And do you know what happened?

This wonderful soul, whose name I didn’t record because that would have been a really good idea, said “that’s okay. SL is being really laggy” and I very nearly burst into tears because no one ever says “that’s okay” when they’ve been brutally attacked by a demonic washing machine being ridden by a foolish 8-year-old avatar.

She was so wonderful and gracious I apologised some more and actually turned red from being so embarrassed and I wanted to just dissolve right then and there. I was also wondering why SL didn’t crash right at that moment and swallow me up in it. Bloody Second Life, it’s never there when you need it, am I right?!

Demonic washing machines aside, I also found this adorable little sitting area with cats and a floppy disk flower pot! It’s a flower pot made out of floppy disks! It’s so brilliant I want to make one in that place which shall not be named (RL). If you’re too young to remember floppy disks then, well, I guess you should stop at the demonic washing machines, or skip ahead to the next paragraph.
Also, I’m getting a real kick out of writing, and saying, “floppy disks”! Partly because the geek side of me is in awe someone actually thought of that (I need to go back and find out whom the creator is) and partly because it’s one of the unicorns of Geekdom. Okay, okay I’ll shut up about the floppy disk!

If you weren’t aware by now, I’ve only dropped maybe 10 hints, I am totally a cat person. I’m not a neko in-world anymore, I am exploring other avenues at the moment, but in the other world (known to some as real life) I wear cat ears more often than a sane person would, purr and have most of the traits of a cat complete with the “Slave, I need attention, NOW” stare.

So I’m a cat person, we got it.
Somnia has cat couches. Couches that have cat ears and cat paws and are cat coloured and omg CATS.

Apparently I went a little overboard on the cat bit, but it was adorable and I want some or maybe I’ll just move in there when no one’s around so it doesn’t look like I’m living in a shop, on a couch and racing washing machines…

Somnia Fangirl Edit_008

Now, I’m a good little kitty and actually sent Sanura Summer Snowpaw (sanura.snowpaw) an email — I did not stalk her profile to find out her preferred way to correspond (sarcasm, again) — to ask if it would be okay to feature her store in this episode of the Fangirl Edit. Particularly since I’m not featuring it in the normal sense of the word “feature”. Anyway, Sanura is absolutely lovely and told me a little more about the washing machines:

I thought I would give you a little bit of info as well as to the fantastic rideable racing washing machines a friend made them and I had her original design in my store for years. and when I rebranded I asked her to make me a few for my store in my colors. Which she did shortly thereafter I believe she left SL. They are a bit hard to control but I think that is part of their charm they bounce up and down and have a bit of a mind of their own. It is also HILARIOUS because they end up all over the sim and I have to go track them down from time to time.

That just about does it!
If I’m not at home you know where to find me 😉

Fangirl Edit #2 Dancing Groot

If you follow me on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, plurk or Flickr you would have seen the picture above with the caption:

Can you guess what I’m doing?

Hint: “I’m hooked on a feeling…”

You will need your geek hat for this one!

Or some variation thereof.
And you thought I just copied and pasted everything! Ha!

If you guessed that it had something to do with this weeks Fangirl Edit you’re almost there. You deserve a cookie for getting so far with such a random clue. hands out the cookies

While I was flitting around Second Life™ finding all the gifts in the Wayward Hunt I spent quite a bit of time in Reign looking for said gift. While I was waiting for everything to rez I noticed they had a front desk and, being the nosey woman I am, I decided to take a closer look. That’s when I saw this:

Dancing Groot!

I squee-ed and giggled and just about fell over from the excitement.
In-world he does actually dance and he has the cutest little smile on his teeny, tiny sapling face! His little pot is also highly textured which just makes this replica so much better!
I forgot all about the gift and watched Groot dance his little heart out for almost an hour. Seriously, it was a good 45-50 minutes of Groot-watching. It’s the little things, you know?

I realise some of you aren’t as geeky as I am and are probably wondering who, or what, this Groot thing is. Simply, Groot is a character from the comic book-turned-movie Guardians of the Galaxy.  He’s voiced by Vin Diesel and I swear this little Groot actually has some resemblance, but then I did stare at his dancing form for almost an hour so I’m bound to see more than what’s actually there.

Oh! I should probably mention that I did end up finding the gift, which of course made the adventure that much more fun. I left with the biggest, and probably cheesiest, smile on my face. I’ll let you decide:

I admit that I may have toned the smile down a bit so I didn’t look too much like a weirdo in a store full of other Wayward Hunters! Although if they’re able to see my “look at” crosshairs then it’s highly likely I did look like a weirdo for staring at one spot on the desk for so long. It was worth it!

My geeky heart is full again this week. Now please excuse me while I head back to Reign to watch Groot again.

Fangirl Edit #1 Strawberry Singh and Wimey

This is the first of a series of posts on my blog called the Fangirl Edit. Once a week — on a day that I am yet to decide — I will post about a person, shop or product that resulted in me having a fangirl moment.

For those not versed in this vocabulary, you can see the urban dictionary definition of fangirling here. I will be referring their definition when I mention “fangirl”.

This morning I partially woke up to new notifications on WordPress. This is neither ground breaking nor particularly interesting in terms of posts so I decided I would actually wake up, get out of bed and trudge to the kitchen in search of coffee.

Fast forward ten minutes. Okay it was more like 30 but I won’t tell if you won’t.

With coffee in hand I went through all of the notifications I’d received while I slept. That’s when I saw this:

Screenshot 2015-04-15 11.40.39

I am not ashamed to say that I ran into the office and part squealed, part giggled “LOOK, LOOK, LOOK!” and then proceeded to push my phone into Eidann’s* face so severely he actually had to move back to avoid finding his face squished into my phone.
It doesn’t get much more fangirl than that!

This week has been rather epic since there’s actually been two fangirl moments.

The second one happened a few days ago while I was — surprise, surprise — checking my morning notifications. It’s true, I read my notifications like some people read the morning paper, but when so much awesome happens can you really blame me?
Anyway, I’d seen Wimey in the Fifty Linden Friday roundup last Friday and I went to check it out. I was trying to fangirl in the store, but it was a little too busy and my internet is utterly hopeless (thank you ridiculous Australian internet infrastructure) so I ended up spending more time trying to log in than actually being logged in.

So a few mornings later when I saw the notification that the owner of Wimey, Sash Arabello, was following me I reacted in much the same way as I had with Strawberry’s notification.
I’d have taken a screen shot of the notification but I didn’t know then that I was going to be doing this series. Don’t worry, I still have some proof of my fangirling:

Screenshot 2015-04-15 19.09.37

Insert cheesy grinning here.

My little fangirl heart is full this week. I hope your fangirl/boy moments are also this epic!
