Fangirl Edit #4: My Adventure with a Linden Home

Raznay Decosta SL12B Second Life 12th Birthday Celebrations Exhibit

As you may already be aware — I am slightly envious if you’re not — this week marks the 12th Anniversary of Second Life® being cool.
There are tonnes of celebrations going on over at the SL12B (Second Life® 12th Birthday) sims. If you haven’t done so already head over to their website and see the lineup of entertainment, if the exhibits alone don’t whet your appetite!
And remember, pretty much everything at SL12B is interactive. So touch, sit, click and tickle away while you’re there!

With all this birthday excitement — mine just so happens to be around the corner as well — I thought I’d take a moment to reflect on a recent-ish interaction I had with a most remarkably lovely Linden. By recent-ish I mean within the last month, I think.

One bright sunny day I logged into Second Life® expecting to bound around and be merry. I was changing my hair for the 1,876,339th time that day when I noticed my little linden home. I don’t usually pay an awful lot of attention to it as it’s pretty small and really only the four walls I sit in when I’m trying to write or focus on anything but shopping.
Anyway, I noticed the four walls and the floor and the ceiling and the outdoor area and I cringed. I’d had the same place for something like 4 years.

It needed to change.

So I decide on my 1,876, 340th hair and click the little wall panel — conveniently located on the wall for my occasionally oblivious self — to access my Linden home settings.
Being a highly indecisive cat I thought I would go through all of the pre-fab (not even the right term, but ignorance is bliss) homes to find one I mostly like and then tweak the settings a little to my unique taste.

I click on the first design that I think I’ll like and then go back into my Firestorm viewer. I stomp around my bright cherry wood home while I “ummm” and “ahhh” about certain aspects of the changes.
Eventually — sometimes I do actually get to the point — I decide that I don’t like the way it looks and want to try a different style. Off I skip back to my browser to tweak me some more settings.

Insert tweaking here

And then I go back into Firestorm, just like I did the last time.
Only my house didn’t change. It’s still the bright cherry wood thing that’s starting to make my eyes water.

Back over to my browser. Click the new design and return to Firestorm.
Cherry red wood greets me.
Pick another design in the browser, head back to Firestorm.
Cherry red wood grins at me.
Refresh the browser.
Cherry red wood giggles at me.
Close browser tab, click wall panel in Second Life® again and pick another design.
Cherry red wood glaring at me suggestively.
Browser now has an error message.
Expletives expelled.

Naturally I thought I had done something wrong so I cleared my cache and rebooted the Second of Life. I tickled that wall panel like it was going to squeal — it didn’t, just for the record — then I closed my eyes and hoped for the best as I swiped across to my browser.
I clicked on another house design, I didn’t care anymore as long as it wouldn’t be that blasted red!

Cherry red wood actually had the audacity to groan at me.

More expletives.

Raznay Decosta Fangirl Edit Second Life Exposeur

Okay, so it’s not me. It’s not the browser (I changed from Safari to Chrome to Opera just in case) and I rebooted Second Life® so I was running out of options.
It was at this point I thought I should submit a support ticked with Linden Lab® since the last time I had to submit a ticket it took weeks to rectify and I wasn’t too keen on living in that decidedly lascivious cheery wood home for that long.

To my surprise, I got a response the next morning asking if I’d tried using the Second Life viewer. I actually refrained from rolling my eyes given it was a fair question and I hadn’t as yet tried that. So off I went and logged in with the standard viewer.

Side note: OMG how do people use that without all the pretty photo tools and the stuff and the cool things and hyperventilates

Anyway, I clicked on my beloved wall panel and off we went to my browser.
I held my breath.
And then the error message came up. Ugh. Pout. Expletives.

A few screen shots later and I’ve replied to the nice person — who wasn’t a Linden but was very friendly and polite even though I’m sure they were annoyed with another person who hadn’t tried the standard viewer first; oops!

The following morning I got another email, this time letting me know that my case had been escalated.
That’s three days with the cheeky cherry wood house. I took a few deep breaths and hid at VIRTUALVillage Media, or a sandbox. I may have even spent the money I was saving just so I had an excuse to not be home.

One more morning rolls on in and I have another email. This time it’s from a Lovely Linden telling me that she’s reset the scripts in my home and asking me if I could please test that it works. She informed me she was able to change the settings, which let me get my hopes up that she’d changed it to something other than that gory cherry wood.

My hopes were dashed.

But I consoled myself in the knowledge that’s not what I was there for. I was on a mission of the highest importance and I needed to fulfil that mission before my sadness could take hold.

I clicked the wall panel, got whisked off to my browser and there I found a page with different house designs to choose from. It had been so long I thought it was just a delusion!
I held my breath to steady my shaking hands and clicked on a style.

I slowly made my way back to Second Life® where I was greeted with stone! And grey! And pale blonde wood!
I cheered with delight!
I sang the song of my people, which just so happened to be the theme song from Firefly; the Ballad of Serenity. It seemed incredibly fitting for some reason. If you don’t know it, hit play and decide for yourself:

I can safely say that my home is back to its beautiful self. I did indeed go back to the original design with my original tweaks. After all that excitement with the cherry wood I just couldn’t handle any more outrageous homes!

Thank you, Linden Labs® for fixing my little home!

Fangirl Edit #2 Dancing Groot

If you follow me on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, plurk or Flickr you would have seen the picture above with the caption:

Can you guess what I’m doing?

Hint: “I’m hooked on a feeling…”

You will need your geek hat for this one!

Or some variation thereof.
And you thought I just copied and pasted everything! Ha!

If you guessed that it had something to do with this weeks Fangirl Edit you’re almost there. You deserve a cookie for getting so far with such a random clue. hands out the cookies

While I was flitting around Second Life™ finding all the gifts in the Wayward Hunt I spent quite a bit of time in Reign looking for said gift. While I was waiting for everything to rez I noticed they had a front desk and, being the nosey woman I am, I decided to take a closer look. That’s when I saw this:

Dancing-Groot-Fangirl-Edit-2_001-Complete

Dancing Groot!

I squee-ed and giggled and just about fell over from the excitement.
In-world he does actually dance and he has the cutest little smile on his teeny, tiny sapling face! His little pot is also highly textured which just makes this replica so much better!
I forgot all about the gift and watched Groot dance his little heart out for almost an hour. Seriously, it was a good 45-50 minutes of Groot-watching. It’s the little things, you know?

I realise some of you aren’t as geeky as I am and are probably wondering who, or what, this Groot thing is. Simply, Groot is a character from the comic book-turned-movie Guardians of the Galaxy.  He’s voiced by Vin Diesel and I swear this little Groot actually has some resemblance, but then I did stare at his dancing form for almost an hour so I’m bound to see more than what’s actually there.

Oh! I should probably mention that I did end up finding the gift, which of course made the adventure that much more fun. I left with the biggest, and probably cheesiest, smile on my face. I’ll let you decide:

Fangirl-Edit-2-Dancing-Groot-Complete

I admit that I may have toned the smile down a bit so I didn’t look too much like a weirdo in a store full of other Wayward Hunters! Although if they’re able to see my “look at” crosshairs then it’s highly likely I did look like a weirdo for staring at one spot on the desk for so long. It was worth it!

My geeky heart is full again this week. Now please excuse me while I head back to Reign to watch Groot again.

Razzy Takes on the Double Threat Meme

Double-Threat-Meme_001-Complete

When I decided to complete this Berry Meme I thought it would be fun to answer some questions so you’d get to know a little bit more about me. It was a lot of fun, but it also highlighted something I have been feeling recently that I couldn’t quite put my finger on.

Loneliness.

It’s not for a lack of making friends or meeting some incredibly wonderful people, because I have done both in the few weeks since I re-entered Second Life. I think it’s more the fact that the people I used to spend a lot of time with have all moved on, and I miss them. Those people that I was closest to are friends in real life, so they are still part of my life. It’s just… well… It’s not the same as being in Second Life and exploring, talking and laughing together.

With that in mind, I do apologise for the sad tone in some of my responses. I have tried many times to edit this to be less maudlin, but it just kept getting worse. So this is as good as it gets.

If you are so inclined to participate in this Meme here are the instructions:

Share your answers to the following questions.

Two online screen names you’ve had: I’m a bit of a weirdo and have used Raznay exclusively for 10+ years. I do have another screen name that I use for RL purposes, but I’d like to keep that private; at least for now.

Two video games you’ve played: DC Universe Online and World of Warcraft. I am a gamer in real life so it was hard to pick only two.

Two things you love about Second Life: I love meeting so many wonderful people as I flit around, especially lately while I’ve been participating in the Wayward Hunt. The other thing I love about Second Life is that it gives me the opportunity to do all the things I am not necessarily able to do in real life.

Two things you’ve done in Second Life: I have designed and created clothes and I have been a successful DJ.

Two things you still want to do in Second Life: I would like to learn how to craft mesh items and I would like to start making my own poses so I can create the images I picture when I write my posts.

Two things you like about your Second Life avatar: I love Razzy’s height and her shape, particularly her face.

Two of your Second Life Pet Peeves: People who don’t read profiles before contacting me and people being unnecessarily rude.

Two things you did as a newb that you’re embarrassed of: Buying Xcite body parts as a joke, because spending that much money for a joke is just totally hilarious
I’m also highly embarrassed — and ashamed — of trusting people who didn’t deserve my trust.

Two of your closest friends in Second Life: At this point in time I really only have one close friend. After a three year absence not a lot of people keep you on their friends list and even less are still around.

Two of the most beloved things in your inventory: Definitely my Maitreya Mesh Body and photo’s of friends that have long since moved on.

When the Old and New Collide

Old-and-New---Studio_002-Complete

If you follow me on either Twitter or Plurk you would have seen that I was cleaning out my inventory. Before I started my serious de-hoarding I had 20,500+ items in that black hole. One tends to hoard things after 8 years… At least I hope I am not the only one!

The hardest part of the process was knowing that I would never wear my Last Call outfits again or have any reason to pull out all my old neko things from Catnip, Atomic and even Hybrid.
I will confess that I have kept my Last Call folder in the hopes I will some day be able to apply the clothes to my mesh body. I know that’s not very likely but I need to hope; they were the first high fashion, good quality clothes I bought in Second Life. They come complete with memories of my first months and years here. Things that remind me of good times are hard to let go of.

Bonus: fifty points to your house if you know those shops, aside from Atomic as Ivy Graves is still creating wonderful things for us.
Another twenty-five points if you shopped at those stores yourself!

Anyway, I still have lots more culling, sorting and decluttering to do but I’m down to a high, but respectable, 9,814 items. Insert cheering here
During this process I realised something quite startling: I am totally, wholly and completely invested in my Maitreya Mesh Body, Lara 3.0. In fact, I am so invested I can’t actually bring myself to take it off.
This means that the grand idea I had of posting about pre-mesh clothes in my pre-mesh body is not going to happen. Also, I may have thrown out everything I couldn’t wear or wouldn’t work with my mesh body.

With that said, I decided today to play with some old skins and try out some of the pre-mesh outfits I kept. Then, because I had an idea, I added some things I picked up at last week’s Fifty Linden Friday.

This was the result:

Old-and-New_008-Complete
Location: Storybrooke Gardens

Until this point I had completely forgotten how hard it is to get a good picture with pre-mesh clothes. I very nearly gave up because the damn prims were going through my legs, arms, shoulders and at one point my head! And that was while I was trying to find the right poses for the look, without spending any money since I have a wonderful balance of L$88 that has to last me until I get a job.

Now, I realise you can’t really see what I’m wearing in that awesome picture so I took a couple in the studio to show the outfit, skin and accessories a little better.

Old-and-New-Studio_001-CompleteMy photoshop skills are okay but I have no idea how to get rid of that last bit of prim in her leg! More learning; bring it on!
