The SS Galaxy Returns to Port, Forever

SS Galaxy _001 Complete

On the 3rd of May, 2015, the SS Galaxy will return to port after embarking on her final cruise.

I’ll be honest, in my eight years of Second Life™ I’ve never heard of the SS Galaxy nor did I have any idea there was a ship that spans three regions in-world. But now I do know and it’s closing. I feel like I’ve been cheated out of something wonderful. Or, probably more to the point, like the kid no one invites to the party, even though a cruise liner isn’t really my thing. I thought I’d have a look anyway, just in case I was missing out on something big.
The first thing I noticed when I arrived was the sheer immensity of the SS Galaxy.
It is huge. Massive. Gigantic.
I understand why she’s called the Queen of the Sagittarian Sea; nothing could possibly compare to her.
Anyway, I walk along the gangway towards the boarding section of the ship and notice the 7 Seas Fishing game, advertising boards and a few other bits and pieces. While those things tend to put me off — I’m all for advertising I just don’t want it to be the first thing I see, thanks — I decided to continue forth since there’s not a great deal of time left to explore this ship.
Now, I don’t often get to play the tourist so this was a bit of a first for me. I thought I’d take advantage of it and snap a few tourist-like pictures. For full sized pictures of the SS Galaxy in all of her glory and to read why she’s closing please see Inara Pey’s “SS Galaxy: a last cruise into the sunset”.

The SS Galaxy is also a residential estate, event venue and shopping precinct. That’s perhaps not so surprising given she does, you know, span three regions. I managed to find the cinema, an art gallery, the shops — of course — and the deck areas. I followed the jogging path for a little while until I came across the bow of the ship. I couldn’t resist an “I’M THE QUEEN OF THE WORLD!!” moment; done my way of course!
SS Galaxy _005 Complete
While I enjoyed my hour or so walking around that huge ship I don’t think I’ll be jumping aboard the next — if any — cruise liner. It was interesting to see and I loved that there are still new things for me to find in Second Life™. However, if you’re interested in something like this there are only a few days left to visit the Queen of the Sagittarian Sea so if you want to see what it’s all about here’s the SLurl.

Club-Borealis_007-Complete

Last Friday night I was invited to attend part two of the Grand Opening of a new club by the wonderful name of Club Borealis. I say “part two” because I want to feel special since I was asleep when the actual opening took place, sometimes time zones are a real pain.

Anyway, I went along as it had been a little while since my last human interaction while logged in and, honestly, I was more than a little excited to have been invited. It’s the little things, you know?

The awesome DJ Mackenzie Abbot was the player of the tunes, while Shiraz Jacobus kept us entertained, and in the know, as the host. There were two lovely dancers on stage, Syranni Jacobus and Krissy, who kept some enthralled with their beauty and amazing skill on stage.

I will be honest here and say I have never really understood having dancers at DJ events. I’ve been told it’s for additional eye candy and while that’s probably a very lucrative reason for the club, I still don’t really see the point. For instance, if I go to a club that’s promoting a DJ event I am going so I can hear the DJ perform. However, this little side track doesn’t have any bearing on the performance of the club; moving on.

The owners of the club Hal Garren (halgarre), Tasha (tashaepona) and Kalleesti Moirae (ysaera) were very approachable and friendly, which I have always found is a tremendous asset to a successful club. They’re very much team focused and driven, providing a very solid foundation for their staff. Indeed, I did notice this in the two hours I spent there! Perhaps I notice too much, but we’ll leave that for another post.

Like with many new clubs they are hiring DJ’s, Hosts and Dancers. You can find the applications in-world on the application board, which is on the left hand side of the stage. All completed applications can be deposited in the application mailbox on the ground to the right of the stage. All job-related inquiries should be directed to Kalleesti Moirae (ysaera) or Tasha (tashaepona).

Speaking of application mailboxes, right next to it is a box where you can get the free club t-shirt! It’s mesh — of course I had to test it — so there’s no need to worry if you have a mesh body! It’s a really good quality t-shirt too. Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised even though I  probably should have realised they’d have awesome skills!

Club-Borealis-2_002-Complete

It’s a lovely out door club with an Aurora Borealis circling in the sky. Who am I kidding?! I don’t write about scenery. If you want to see what it looks like go and check it out, join the in-world group and go along to one of their events.

They have a Facebook group too, which is great if you have an account for your avatar. If, like me, you have a page the group won’t be of much help.

There’s also an event board, which I was told will be open for competitions in the not-too-distant future! It’s been so long since I’ve been to a comp I wouldn’t even know what to do at one anymore!

All in all it’s a great club with a relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff and good vibes. Check it out if Second Life clubs are your thing!

Additional note: Facebook actually has a policy about using fake names for accounts and you can find your avatar account closed without any warning. If you are so inclined you can read Facebook’s full Terms and Conditions here.
However, you are allowed to create a page for your avatar or any other fictional character. Strawberry Singh has a fantastic tutorial about that here.

Full disclosure: I was asked to write this post, however, I have not been paid to write it.

When the Old and New Collide

Old-and-New---Studio_002-Complete

If you follow me on either Twitter or Plurk you would have seen that I was cleaning out my inventory. Before I started my serious de-hoarding I had 20,500+ items in that black hole. One tends to hoard things after 8 years… At least I hope I am not the only one!

The hardest part of the process was knowing that I would never wear my Last Call outfits again or have any reason to pull out all my old neko things from Catnip, Atomic and even Hybrid.
I will confess that I have kept my Last Call folder in the hopes I will some day be able to apply the clothes to my mesh body. I know that’s not very likely but I need to hope; they were the first high fashion, good quality clothes I bought in Second Life. They come complete with memories of my first months and years here. Things that remind me of good times are hard to let go of.

Bonus: fifty points to your house if you know those shops, aside from Atomic as Ivy Graves is still creating wonderful things for us.
Another twenty-five points if you shopped at those stores yourself!

Anyway, I still have lots more culling, sorting and decluttering to do but I’m down to a high, but respectable, 9,814 items. Insert cheering here
During this process I realised something quite startling: I am totally, wholly and completely invested in my Maitreya Mesh Body, Lara 3.0. In fact, I am so invested I can’t actually bring myself to take it off.
This means that the grand idea I had of posting about pre-mesh clothes in my pre-mesh body is not going to happen. Also, I may have thrown out everything I couldn’t wear or wouldn’t work with my mesh body.

With that said, I decided today to play with some old skins and try out some of the pre-mesh outfits I kept. Then, because I had an idea, I added some things I picked up at last week’s Fifty Linden Friday.

This was the result:

Until this point I had completely forgotten how hard it is to get a good picture with pre-mesh clothes. I very nearly gave up because the damn prims were going through my legs, arms, shoulders and at one point my head! And that was while I was trying to find the right poses for the look, without spending any money since I have a wonderful balance of L$88 that has to last me until I get a job.

Now, I realise you can’t really see what I’m wearing in that awesome picture so I took a couple in the studio to show the outfit, skin and accessories a little better.

Old-and-New-Studio_001-CompleteMy photoshop skills are okay but I have no idea how to get rid of that last bit of prim in her leg! More learning; bring it on!

A Special Kind of Meme

On-Location---Blithe_014-PS-PM-Colour

I’ll admit that I don’t read a lot of blogs. It’s not that I don’t want to read them, I actually have them all queued up in my viewer, it’s just that when I sit down at my desk I immediately get to work on my next photo or my next post. Having said that, one post I did manage to read during one of those rare “free” moments was this one by Strawberry Singh.

This meme struck a chord with me right away. So many things have been going on, some of them have even been good, that it was nice to stop and just be mindful and in the moment. Not unsurprisingly this helped me to process some things and I actually felt better for it.

I’ve actually been doing this every day, just for me, to see where my headspace is and to address any issues that are there. It’s been incredibly helpful to channel the dreary mindfulness exercises. I’m pretty sure that wasn’t what Berry had in mind when she started this meme, but there you go.

Meme instructions:

Copy and paste the following statements in your post and complete them writing down the first thing that pops into your head. Don’t forget to link your post in the comments.

I am… shy.

I want… love and respect.

I have… coffee.

I wish… for more coffee, and chocolate.

I hate… ignorant people and rude people.

I fear… abandonment.

I search… for self acceptance.

I wonder… if I can do this.

I regret… a lot.

I never… forget and rarely forgive.

I always… land on my feet.

I usually… laugh at my own jokes.

I dance… in my seat.

I sing… as often as possible, when I am alone.

I often… spend too much time in Second Life.

I sometimes… wonder why he loves me.

I need… to buy more coffee.

I cry… often.

I should… take more photo’s.

I love… my wonderful little family.
