Challenges, Baby

For the past few days I’ve been working on my resume for a job that I really want. One part of the application asked for a full body shot and a head shot. That’s no big deal right? I mean, I take lots of photo’s for the blog and to practice my craft. Yet I’ve never taken some for serious purposes, if you know what I mean.

I’ve been fretting over these pictures and whether or not I have the skills required to pull off what I envision in my head. Yesterday, I just went ahead and took the pictures and edited them. I know they’re not as good as other people could do and I suppose I could have hired someone to take them for me, but that would have defeated the purpose.
need to learn.
want to improve and I can’t do that if I’m outsourcing my work.

Of course I wouldn’t talk about something I’ve worked on and not add it! You can view them below. Feel free to stroke my ego a little bit. I sure could use it about now.

Please note: they are intentionally plain and basic. I was after a more relaxed “school photo” kind of feel.

Here’s the full body:

And here’s the head shot:

Of course I will list what I am wearing and the poses that I used. Both photo’s were taken in my studio at my tiny little home.

The Player of the Tunes

A long, long time ago,
In a sim no longer here,
Raznay played the tunes at night…

If you haven’t read my About Razzy section yet you wouldn’t know that in my early days of Second Life I was a Hostess and, gradually, I became a DJ.
I say “gradually” because it wasn’t entirely my idea, nor the path I saw myself going down. The venue that I was hosting for — which included welcoming new players to SL and teaching them how to navigate the game — was in need of a DJ and I just happened to be around, bored and wanted to do anything I could to please my superiors.
Within an hour I was loaded up with a stream, software on my computer to actually stream the music into SL and absolutely no idea what the hell I was doing.

In spite of knowing absolutely nothing about DJ-ing that first set went remarkably well! I ended up having a regular set and would fill in when others couldn’t make it, which meant I ended up working multiple sets a day; every day.

I’m sure it wouldn’t surprise you when I tell you that I burnt out quickly. I learnt my lesson, eventually, that I needed to say “No” and mean it. I’ll write more about that magical word in another post.

My DJ career finally ended when I realised that I needed a break from Second Life to try and regain some semblance of a real life.
I would be lying if I said I didn’t miss it, after all it was a big part of my life in second life. It was also something I happened to be good at and that’s not something I think anyone can walk away from too easily.
I also earned a decent income that meant I could fund my ridiculous shopping addiction. That would have been more awesome if I actually had free time to go shopping since this was before the marketplace even existed and x-street was still in its infancy and not a lot of shops were selling their products that way.

I must admit the marketplace has made my return so much more rewarding as I can shop at multiple stores at once! And on lazy days I don’t even have to leave my little home! It’s as close to heaven as I think I’ll ever get!!

A Lesson Learned or How to be Grateful of Failures

Some days, no matter how well you’ve planned it, things just do not follow that plan. Yesterday was one of those days for me.

I gathered all the things together for a particular photo I wanted to take, scouted a location and found the most wonderful spot. I decided to experiment with some of the preset lighting options and, much to my surprise, I ended up with some absolutely terrific shots. Or so I thought.

After I’d returned my camera settings to mild — damn this ridiculously slow internet — and grabbed a taxi home I decided I really wanted to get stuck into editing those pictures. I opened the relevant folders on my computer only to find all of my brilliant shots had saved as blue screens of death. Every. Single. One.

There were a lot of swear words spoken at that point. And some serious disappointment, especially given I find experimenting with the lighting options very time consuming and, thus, I rarely do it. I know, I should try new techniques, lighting options and ideas more often as that will help to improve my photography.

Anyway, back to the blue screen of death.
I’m not sure what caused it so I don’t know what to look for to prevent it happening again. I did learn, however, that I need to check the files have saved correctly before leaving a place. Especially when taking photographs on location.

I did attempt to re-take the photos but I couldn’t get any of the composition right because, naturally, I wanted it to look exactly the same as my wonderful first shoot.
I understand that these things happen and it’s okay to re-shoot and even encouraged as it’s likely the extra shots, particularly at different angles and with different lighting, will  improve the chances of a useable shot. Excluding the blue screen of death of course.
It’s just, well, I was really impressed with the shots I’d managed to get the first time around.

After a few more choice swear words I packed up my pixels and went home to sulk. I tried to get a few shots in the studio at my house, but they also didn’t turn out like I’d hoped they would. By that stage it was quite late at night so I decided that enough was enough, I’d stop forcing this to happen and just go to bed.

Let me tell you, it helped! I was able to not only write this post but was able to grab a pretty decent shot to show just how angry I was!!
